A few months ago, I had this notion that I really only knew a small percentage of independent filmmakers in Winnipeg and I wanted to meet more.
I read in a filmmaker blog about a group of filmmakers that put together a BBQ as a netowork platform which turned out to be a success! That blog in question was that of Chris Jones of Guerilla Film Maker. Read his article, "Why Your Twitter Photo Is SO Important", here. Chris & Guerilla Film Maker are excellent resources for indy filmmakers! Thanks Chris! With that in mind I had to come up with a plan to get other people from the film community to come together. I thought maybe a BBQ would work but could not predict if the weather would be good that day. I thought maybe a pub or something of that nature but again, I wanted to keep it more community-like. I also figured if I was going to pull it off, I would need to find other people to help out. There was an actress and filmmaker I had met the past while whom I had seen doing some things in the community. The actress was Ail whom had organized a flea market out in Osbourne Village and the Filmmaker was Travis, whom I had seen opened up a venue and began renting it out to various musicians and filmmakers. I ran into both of them one day at a film event and pitched the idea to them. They both seemed keen on the idea and Ali had the idea of making the 'meet up' a potluck. After that we came up with a good time, date and place and everything was set! The rest, as they say, is...... Today we had the first of what I envision will be many more filmmaker/actor potlucks to come! The food was amazing and everyone had such excellent attitudes! In was so great to meet some new filmmakers and actors in the community and I really hope we build on it. We do not have a date set for the next one but we will soon! Thank you to all whom came out today and made the event quite the success! Join our page, Filmmaker/ Actor Potluck! -Roger. PS: Here is a picture of me and Ali. Keep an eye out for her on the hit TV show "Todd and the Pure Book Of Evil" as well as the upcoming "Wrong Turn 4"!
